Jonathan Pollard, after 30 years in prison – VaYetze –

UPDATE: See New post for NOVEMBER 2020

Jonathan Pollard is the only American ever to receive a life sentence for passing classified information to an ally of the U.S.

Iy”H, on November 20, 2015 Pollard will be released on parole after 30 years. Interestingly enough, it falls out on the Torah reading of Parshat “VaYetze” which is translated as “And He Went Out”. (-:

  1. This is somewhat unrelated, but i thought i’d share this thought:
can just as-well be translated to “And He Will Go Out”, as it can be translated to “And He Went Out”.

This brings me to think about the concept of circularity in life.
Everything seems to be a circle, a rhythm:
Birth and death, seasons and the calendar year, the motions of planets & moons (indeed the very shape of galaxies is always round), breathing in and out, the alleged cosmic expansion and contraction of the universe, the cycle of water, how plants die and are born, how a whale feeds of plankton and when he dies he becomes their fodder, “what goes up must come down”, history repeating, human generations, day and night, carbon dioxide, photosynthesis, the expansion and contraction of all matter and gasses, how wind and pressure dance a cyclic dance…. even bad things: how diseases spread, violence, addiction, failure – are all cyclic.

Perhaps the reason that in the Tanach all past actions can also be read as future actions is because everything that has happened will always happen – is this what Ecclesiastes is talking about?
